Event Descriptions:

Halter: This event is open to the age groups of 1-6 through the Adult divisions. Each age group will be brought in separately, unless stated otherwise before the beginning of the class. It is NOT open to Lead Line. This class is where horses are shown "in hand," meaning that they are led, not ridden, and are judged on their conformation and suitability as breeding stock. Judges will assist in direction during this event.

Western Pleasure: This event is open to the age groups of 1-6 through the Adult divisions. Each age group will be brought in separately, unless stated otherwise before the beginning of the class. It is NOT open to Lead Line. This class is a western style competition that evaluates horses on manners and suitability of the horse for a relaxed but collected gait cadence and relatively slow speed of gait, along with calm and responsive disposition. The horse is to appear to be a "pleasure" to ride and very comfortable, while being very smooth. 1-6 contestants will only be asked to “walk” or “trot”, while the 7-9 through adult classes will be asked to “canter” along with “walk” and “trot”. Judges will give direction throughout the event.

Barrels: This event is offered for all age groups. The pattern will be shortened for Lead Line and 1-6 age groups. They must enter the arena, cross the time-line, and turn 3 barrels in a correct pattern in order to receive a time. Points will only be given to contestants who receive a time, fastest time wins. Contestants can either go to the left barrel first, or the right barrel first, as long as they complete the pattern correctly. Pictures of the correct way to turn the barrels are shown on the following page. A knocked down barrel will result in a 5-second penalty.

Barrel Pattern Example: Please refer to rules DAY OF FUN SHOW for an example

Flags: This event is offered for all age groups. The pattern will be shortened for Lead Line and 1-6 age groups. They must enter the arena, cross the time-line, walk, trot, or run to the barrel, and go around the barrel while taking the flag from the can. They will then return to the starting line carrying the flag. Fastest time wins, and points will only be given to contestants who receive a time. A knocked over barrel will result in a 5-second penalty, and a NO TIME will be given if no flag is returned to the starting line.

Turn and Burn: This event is offered for 1-6 through Adult. This event is not offered to Lead Line. The pattern will be shortened for 1-6. Contestants must enter the arena, cross the time-line, walk, trot, or run to the barrel, and go around the barrel, then returning to the starting line as quickly as possible. A knocked over barrel will result in a 5-second penalty. Fastest time wins, and points will only be awarded to contestants who receive a time.

Poles: This event is offered for all age groups. Lead Line will have a shortened pattern-only ‘weaving’ through 3 poles instead of 6. Contestants may go down on either the left side or the right side, as long as they finish on the opposite side and ‘weave’ correctly. On the following page, a picture shows the two correct patterns that may be used. Each knocked down pole will result in a 5-second penalty. Points will only be awarded to contestants who receive a time, and fastest time will win.

Pole Bending Example:  Please refer to rules DAY OF FUN SHOW for an example

Goats: Goat-untying, and tying will differ depending on the age group (NO ADULT GOAT TYING EFFECTIVE 5/7/16):

Lead Line: Contestants will BE LEAD on their horse down to the goat, where they will jump off their horse. They may receive help, if needed. They will then run to the goat, and pull the string OFF of the tail. They will then run BY the Judge, in order for their time to stop. This is when the timer will stop. Points will be awarded to contestants who receive a time, and the fastest time will win.

1-6: Contestants will RIDE their horse down to the goat, where they will jump off their horse. They may receive help, if needed. They will then run to the goat, and pull the string OFF of the tail. 7-9: Contestants will RIDE their horse down to the goat with an UN-TIED string in their mouth, of which they will get from the fence in front of the announcer’s stand. They will then jump off their horse, run to the goat, and TIE the string on the tail. They will then throw their hands up to signal that they are finished tying. If the string falls off within a 6-second time limit, it will result in a NO TIME. Points will be awarded to contestants who receive a time, and the fastest time will win.

10-13: Contestants will RIDE their horse down to the goat with a goat string/piggin’ string in their mouth, of which they will need to have BEFORE the Fun Show. We will NOT provide contestants will goat string/piggin’ strings that are used for goat’s legs. They will then jump off their horse, run to the goat, flip the goat, and gather 3 legs. Contestants will then TIE the three legs using the goat string/piggin’ string. Contestants will then throw their hands up to signal that they are complete. The goat will need to remain tied for 6-seconds in order to receive a time. Points will be awarded to contestants who receive a time, and the fastest time will win.

Dummy Roping: Dummy Roping will differ depending on the age group:

Lead Line: A “Hay Dummy” will be placed on the ground behind the announcer’s stand. Lead Line and 1-6 Dummy Roping will happen after the Western Pleasure. Contestants will try to catch the dummy with their rope. In the Lead Line and 1-6, they will go in order, each trying to catch the dummy. When a contestant or contestants have finally caught the dummy, the contestants that have CAUGHT the dummy will progress to the next round. The contestants who did not catch will be ‘out’ of the competition. If more than one contestant has caught, they will go against each other until only one person remains. If only one contestant catches in the first round, then they will be declared the winner. Points will only be awarded to the contestants that progress past the first round. If no one catches after 5 attempts, no one will receive points. The contestant that catches the most will be considered the winner.
